AAPS' new event addresses members' need to understand both chemical and biomolecular entities.
The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) will introduce a brand new event, PharmSci 360, in November 2018 to address the evolving educational needs of pharmaceutical scientists.
Members have told AAPS that they are increasingly pressed to learn about and understand both biomolecular and chemical entities, and they turn to AAPS for help. Cross-pollination between these areas is vital to advancing pharmaceutical science itself, as well as the careers of scientists working in pharmaceutical science today.
AAPS is responding to this need with PharmSci 360. AAPS developed PharmSci 360 after reconsidering every aspect of the event experience, including how programming is selected, how the day is structured, and the role of our industry partners in delivering the event.
This new event takes advantage of the greatest strength of the AAPS community: Our members’ ability to deliver cross-discipline learning experiences. The goals for this event include:
- increasing collaboration between chemical- and biologics-focused scientists,
- engaging attendees in a meaningful learning experience,
- bringing new research forward, and
- supporting our members’ business objectives.
FAQs about AAPS PharmSci 360
Is PharmSci 360 replacing the Annual Meeting?
Yes! The final AAPS Annual Meeting took place in November 2017. AAPS is launching a brand new event with a different program and format, AAPS PharmSci 360, November 4–7, 2018, in Washington, D.C.
When is the 2018 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference?
The final AAPS National Biotechnology Conference was held in May 2017.
Why did AAPS retire both the National Biotechnology Conference and Annual Meeting?
AAPS member leaders recognized that the pharmaceutical sciences have changed. Members need more exposure to both biomolecular and chemical entities, regardless of what field and discipline they work in.
How is PharmSci 360 different from the Annual Meeting and the National Biotechnology Conference?
The National Biotechnology Conference focused only on biomolecular topics. The AAPS Annual Meeting, meanwhile, featured split programming—70 percent chemical and 30 percent biomolecular in 2017. This programming no longer addresses our members’ needs. Instead, we have created PharmSci 360, with programming evenly split between chemical and biomolecular entities, and tied together with topics that will help scientists from both fields interact and expand their knowledge.
What does the PharmSci 360 program look like?
PharmSci 360 has a dramatically different schedule and program than previous events. In basic terms, AAPS PharmSci 360 has five scientific tracks, and each track is split in half over biomolecular and chemical science. There will also be two topics—each could be thought of as a theme for event—running through all the tracks.
The scientific program tracks:
- Preclinical (including discovery)
- Bioanalytical
- Clinical pharmacology
- Manufacturing and bioprocessing
- Formulation and quality
Each track will be split equally between chemical and biomolecule areas—for every chemical entity-focused session, there will be a biomolecular session. Each track will also offer scientific depth through symposia, keynote talks, and rapid-fire presentations.
When will the programming be decided, and can I participate?
The new PharmSci 360 Scientific Programming Committee will request program proposals in March 2018. At that time, they will announce the specifics they seek in proposed programming. Final selections will be announced in May.
