Themes for 2018 AAPS PharmSci 360
The advantages of a large scientific conference with the intimate feel of a boutique conference.
Scientific programming at AAPS PharmSci 360 is themed. Here are the themes for the Manufacturing and Bioprocessing track. Find all tracks on the AAPS website.
THEME 1
Continuous Manufacturing and Connected Processes Supporting End-to-End Approaches and Adapting to the Nonblockbuster Era
Today patients expect fast and reliably effective treatment. Simultaneously, the volume per product is predicted to fall in the postblockbuster era, which may be commercially compensated by combining products, but not for individual batch sizes. Continuous and connected processes, ideally from the raw material to the final product, reduce throughput times and optimize costs. They may help overcome threats to the supply chain of marketed products, reduce footprint needs, and improve yields. For biologics, we will explore advanced expression systems and recent improvements in purification technologies, including glycosylation platform expression systems and analysis systems.
THEME 2
Process Controls, Manufacturing & Engineering Challenges and Related Strategies
The quality requirements of manufacturing processes and materials characterization continuously increase. Even if cross-references are possible, each product presents its own challenges. New sensors allow for better in-process controls and process monitoring, or ultimately for parametric release for specific attributes. With computer modeling, process development, process transfers, and process adjustments can be made smarter and more predictable, if verification or validation succeeds. For biological molecules, how far through the manufacturing process immunogenicity is affected and what factors are decisive remain challenging.
This theme focuses on modern strategies to master these challenges for both chemical and biological agents and products.
THEME 3
Approaches to Master CMC of the Future
Chemical: Addressing Patients’ Needs by Drug Delivery Systems and Future Looking Manufacturing Technologies for Small Molecules—focusing on state-of-the-art drug delivery systems and their controlled production; oral systems for administring poorly soluble molecules; and technologies that save material and are flexible, such as 3D printing.
Biomolecular: Accelerated Development and Process Continuum—focusing on setting criteria for manufacturability in early development; using statistical tools for accelerated development and tech/site transfers; and continuous process verification, process adaptations, and process learning.

New at AAPS PharmSci 360: Rapid Fire Presentations
By Gopi Shankar, Ph.D., FAAPS, chair, PharmSci 360 Meeting Content Programming Committee
AAPS PharmSci 360’s goal is to expose attendees to the latest knowledge in the pharmaceutical sciences—both advancements and failures in research and development. In this age of information now and innovations arising from convergence (biology, physics, engineering, IT, etc.), a gap has opened regarding traditionally published literature in journals. What you see there is frequently old news by the time you read it. While journal articles are indeed helpful, they are not necessarily a primary innovation driver any longer. And when is the last time you read a paper describing failures or negative data? AAPS wants to bridge this gap. Ergo, the Rapid Fires were created to feature prepublication, unpublished, or even unpublishable work. In addition to the posters featured at the conference, Rapid Fire presentations can raise the potential for diverse scientific knowledge exchange, triggering innovative ideation, connections, and collaborations among attendees. For Rapid Fire proposal submissions, we simply ask for a title of the presentation and a 150-word description.
Rapid Fires will occur back-to-back in a structured format. Each afternoon will have eight presentations per subtrack—up to 240 Rapid Fires in all! Each is a quick, 10-minute opportunity to talk about a hot topic, including emerging trends, preliminary research results, unusual (but reproducible) findings, failures, innovative concepts, and controversial opinions. A few slides are allowed, but each speaker gets only 10 minutes to present and three minutes for questions—that’s it! These strict time limits will require speakers to be well practiced and disciplined. A moderator will keep the pace going. It’s going to be fun! With Rapid Fires, we believe academic members and students can:
- find collaborators,
- get hired,
- meet a journal editor,
- get experience before an audience, and
- get their research seen by hundreds of scientists.
Industry and exhibitor members can:
- find collaborators.
- generate leads or contacts,
- be visible as a thought leader,
- build credibility, and
- find scientists interested in their field.

Management Training and Career Opportunities at PharmSci 360!
Learn how to handle the most difficult conversations managers face—attend sessions in the Career Development Track: “I said that? I meant this!” How to Be Heard in the Corporate Herd.
One of the most difficult challenges managers face is navigating important
conversations about performance, culture and expectations, and the future of a
program or individual. Attend sessions in the Career Center, and meet speakers
who can help you successfully manage your team.
Also in the Career Development Center on the Solution Center floor:
- LinkedIn Bar: Experts will again offer FREE critiques of your LinkedIn profile
throughout the meeting!
- Recruiters:Industry recruiters will be on-site throughout the meeting to discuss the jobs they are hiring for today.
- Résumé Review: Before the meeting, book an in-depth review of your résumé by a professional working in your field.
- PharmSci 360 Online Job Board: Recruiters are posting jobs to an online board that is available only to meeting attendees! Book your interviews before the meeting!

The Most Innovative Hour of Your Day at AAPS PharmSci 360. Poster Presenters Get 60 Minutes!
AAPS will again present thousands of posters this year, using the intimate, conversational poster forums introduced in 2017. But there are some exciting changes attendees will want to know about:
- NEW! Each poster presenter will have a dedicated screen for 60 minutes.
- NEW! Poster titles will always be visible, even in zoom mode.
- NEW! Screens will be numbered and easy to find on the app and on the floor.
- NEW! All screens will be available for browsing during the first hour each morning. Meet with the authors you missed!
There are poster forums in each neighborhood in the Solution Center. Attendees following a specific track will know exactly where to find that track’s posters.
Back by popular demand: digital screens and the Poster Café (where attendees can look up any poster at any time).
