OPENING PLENARY
Monday, October 26 12:15 pm–1:00 pm
Presentation By Jennifer Doudna, Ph.D.
Jennifer Doudna, Ph.D., is an internationally renowned professor of chemistry and molecular and cell biology at U.C. Berkeley. Doudna and her colleagues rocked the research world in 2012 by describing a simple way of editing the DNA of any organism using an RNA-guided protein found in bacteria. This technology, called CRISPR-Cas9, has opened the floodgates of possibility for human and nonhuman applications of gene editing, including assisting researchers in the fight against HIV, sickle cell disease, and muscular dystrophy.

Posters at AAPS PharmSci 360
Authors Expected to Introduce New Poster Format at PharmSci 360
Registrants have access to posters until Dec. 31
Poster design hasn’t changed in 30 years, since before the introduction of the internet, according to Mike Morrison, a Ph.D. candidate in organizational psychology at Michigan State University. His ideas for changing design, which focused on introducing a billboard-like message in the middle of the poster, bound by what he call an “ammo bar” (where all the data goes, and where the author would point while answering questions), and a “silent presenter bar,” (which contains the introduction, methods, results) generated conversation across the scientific meeting landscape in 2019. Discussion heated up again in the summer of 2020 when he released his second video on the subject, where he challenged poster authors to apply user experience design and “level up” by rewriting titles, adopting a “hero figure layout,” and making posters “surprise and delight” so that they’re more memorable.
A few authors experimented with their poster layouts during the 2019 PharmSci 360, generating good feedback from viewers. When AAPS released the slide templates authors are required to use for 2020 PharmSci 360, three that followed Morrison’s recommendations were included in the options.
Registrants have access to PharmSci 360 posters and abstracts until Dec. 31, 2020, so there’s still time to see a poster in the new layout and judge for yourself whether it’s an improvement.
AAPS Communities have also been invited to present Special Poster Collections to the members of their communities during November and December. A Special Poster Collection is a live panel discussion with a few authors focusing on their work. Look for announcements of these special events in the AAPS Communities.
