Learn about upcoming events starting this spring!
By Andrew M. Vick, Ph.D., AAPS President
Dear colleagues,
There is no better time than now to embrace virtual learning. I say this knowing full well that so many are returning to work or simply wishing for in-person gatherings. To say this is a difficult time is an understatement. If you have not already, I encourage you to browse AAPS’ upcoming events and conferences to find which ones resonate most. You can expect to find rigorous, relevant topics, and impactful speakers. These events are lifelines to your colleagues and scientific communities. I would like to introduce a few.
International Women’s Day
AAPS is listening to members and their desire to explore the crossroads and challenges that arise in our professional work. AAPS Journals and publications have highlighted the wisdom, insight, and experiences of women in science, but this year we are taking it further. This month I’m proud to share that we are hosting two events geared towards the experience of women in science:
First, March 8 is International Women’s Day and AAPS will be hosting a webinar entitled, Still Work to Do: Addressing Sexism with Agency and Allyship, which focuses on how these issues continue to impact women. The film highlights how countless individuals are bravely speaking out and making a difference. AAPS members are encouraged to sign up and participate!
In addition, during March 6 through March 13, you can sign up to watch a screening of the film Picture a Scientist—a documentary movie that chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. By signing up, you will gain access to watch this film on your device at any time during the specified dates.
I would like to thank the Women in Pharmaceutical Science community for their passion in establishing this event, and AAPS staff who stepped up to make these events all widely available to AAPS members.
National Biotechnology Conference
Coming this May, I am excited to highlight AAPS’ National Biotechnology Conference (NBC). This conference is entirely virtual and held May 17-20, 2021.
There are three primary tracks for NBC:
Next in Sequence? Nucleic-Acid-Based Therapies: Current State and Future Promise: This track will explore the current state of Nucleic Acid (NA) based therapies with a comprehensive look across the applications, barriers to success, and the development cycle for these medicines.
Antibody Therapies: Tackling New Frontiers: This track will explore current developments in the antibody therapies field, including antibody-drug conjugates and other novel therapeutic approaches.
Cell-Based Therapies: The Future of Regenerative Medicine: This track will take a comprehensive look at state-of-the-art developments in the field of cell therapies.
In addition to the sessions within these tracks, there will be live LinkedIn critiques daily as a part of the Career Development track, live poster sessions, and dedicated times for networking. Summer through fall, there are more ways to stay engaged, like the Land O’ Lakes conference in July, and the 2021 PharmSci 360 in the fall. You can read more about these events in this issue of AAPS Newsmagazine.
These events serve us as guideposts throughout the year to pause and dive deeper into your own personal growth. These are times where you can look forward to connecting with colleagues, find inspiration in your career, and expand your learning. I hope that you will take a moment to mark these dates on your calendar and plan to participate in these outstanding events.
With gratitude,
Andy Vick
