Gratitude for how pharmaceutical scientists are making a difference in the world.
By Andrew M. Vick, Ph.D., AAPS President
Dear colleagues,
Welcome spring 2021. Around one year ago in the United States and around the world, pandemic precautions like masks, lockdowns, and quarantines were just beginning. As pharmaceutical scientists, the world has continued to look to us for our research and insight. Our efforts have never been so vital are as we research and work relentlessly toward solutions related not only to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to countless other therapeutic areas of research where our efforts are creating hope in hopeless situations. I am proud of our collective work as a community of scientists dedicated to the public and keeping them healthy.
During 2020, AAPS completed our annual salary survey. The opportunity to respond is always provided to all AAPS members. I’m glad to share that concerning compensation and stability, the survey indicates growth consistent with previous years’ results. Responses highlight the insight and valuable perspectives of AAPS members who have earned degrees all over the world, and work throughout private industry and academia, among others.
The fortitude of this community tells me that we are up for whatever challenges may be ahead. Personally, I am invigorated to learn, witness, and participate in pharmaceutical science during this pivotal time.
As important as it is for us to maintain our focus on serving and helping, we must refill our own reserves from time-to-time as well. This helps to keep our minds refreshed. Attending events and connecting with fellow scientists can help renew our perspective when ideas and approaches feel stale. In that regard, now is the time to prepare to register for AAPS’ National Biotechnology Conference (NBC) May 17–20.
NBC will bring together pharmaceutical scientists working in biotechnology from around the world, including other leaders in the pharmaceutical community. Like AAPS’ PharmSci 360, NBC will follow a track-based structure. This event is fully virtual and will also offer a career development program focused on developing management and leader- ship skills, and a career fair to help job-hunters. I encourage you to take some time to browse the program preview in this issue of AAPS Newsmagazine.
With scientific events, discussions in the AAPS communities, and our shared passion for pharmaceutical science, I hope you find a second home with your member- ship at AAPS. We value your insight and our goal is to always support you.
With gratitude,
Andy
