A Focus on Outcomes and the Future
By Andrew M. Vick, Ph.D., AAPS President
Over five decades we can see how cancer treatments and research have improved the lives of millions. The death rate in the U.S. has been declining--a notable point when we consider how cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. This year, The American Society of Clinical Oncology awarded AstraZeneca for its Tagrisso drug which reduces the risk of dying from lung cancer or relapse by four-fifths over three years. The world of cancer research has faced challenges considering the Covid-19 pandemic with limits and interruptions in clinical trials.
Our feature article in this issue addresses the topic of cancer immunotherapy: the artificial stimulation of the immune system to treat cancer. Cancer immunotherapy relies on improving the immune system’s natural ability to fight the disease. It is an application of the fundamental research of cancer immunology and a growing subspeciality of oncology.
Most notably, it has been 50 years since the National Cancer Act was established. When I reflect on what can happen in the span of five decades, I am inspired. There is tireless work being done to improve the lives of people around the world facing a cancer diagnosis and every improved outcome is another chance at extending the life of someone fighting to regain their health. During this time, there has no doubt been plenty of AAPS members and volunteers who have played a role in the development and research of cancer drugs and cancer immunotherapy. If you have a story you would like to share, reach out and let us know, or share it in your AAPS community.
Cancer Research at AAPS’ PharmSci 360
This year at AAPS’ PharmSci 360 there are over sixty presentations on and cancer both in-person and on demand. As well, the opening plenary for PharmSci 360 features oncologist and cancer research winner, Dr. Siddartha Mukherjee. I excited to watch and learn from Dr. Mukherjee and many other presenters.
Please take some time to browse the PharmSci 360 program preview in the newsmagazine and the online program to see each and every presentation happening at this year’s event. I look forward to your participation!
