An interview with authors Fernando J. Muzzio and Sarang Oka
What was the motivation for you to write this book?
There were several factors that motivated us to write this book. At the time of conception of the book, we noticed that the rate of adoption of continuous manufacturing (CM) processes had accelerated (and continues to be the case). However, a definitive and concise resource on the basic principles of the technology, focusing on providing practical advice regarding the development of CM processes and implementation of the technology, appeared to be missing. Our main motivation was to address this gap.
The aim of the book was to present the engineering toolbox as it is applied to continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing process design for solid-dose products. Much of the material in the book comes from the firsthand experience of the authors and their collaborators as “first adopters” of the technology. The book follows a systematic stepwise approach to the design of an integrated continuous manufacturing system. We hope that the book will serve as a useful first resource for practitioners or students of the technology.
